I knew it would be dangerous to post my little lesson :) Going from general principles to design considerations would be even more dangerous for me. I are not a en-gin-eer.

What you are talking about really is making an adjustment to the internal impedance of the UPS; the UPS cannot change the impedance of any external load. I expect, but don't know for sure, the UPS designers would attempt to match their device for the best performance with the most likely loads they will encounter. It probably would not be cost effective to make it adaptable. Still, it's entirely possible that they have some protection circuitry in place to keep the thing from blowing up if you connect something it is not designed for, like a short.
