John - Re: "I don't think so. The PS2 is a consumer electronics product, where Sony has infinitely more experience than Microsoft. They have relationships in the distribution channels, they have the marketing experience, and they have been known to occasionally bring products, that work consistently, to market on time.
Sony has the advantage of the first to market with this specialized game/DVD/Internet device. I think that Sony can and will react to whatever Microsoft does, probably before Microsoft can get to retail shelves. Consumer electronics is Sony's core business, this is an adventure for Microsoft."

All your arguments make sense - and I can't argue with them.

However, having "personally" experienced (as a BUYER - not a USER) the Sony PlayStation - Nintendo 64 - Sega DreamCast, I have observed the following:

1. The Hardware/Console prices rapidly become cheap to the point of absurdity.

2. Kids/Gamers/Parents essentially can buy any given console - and in fact, end up BUYING THEM ALL - just to play whatever HIT GAME that happens to be in vogue.

There is LITTLE or NO LOYALTY to a given platform. None.

The GAMES are the "thing".

If Microsoft and its allies can produce a good selection of games, they can make a big penetration into the market - and they don't have to defeat any of the existing console manufacturers to make it happen.

A point of reference - these game consoles are now selling for the same amount of money as it takes to fill up the gas tank on a full size Sedan or SUV !
