I haven't read enough about exactly what all the soldiers are doing and expect to accomplish, but it looks like a never-ending fiasco to be stationed there as a foreign force, and the sooner they pull out the better.

I have a book that describes the Pashtun people of south and eastern Afghanistan, who number somewhere over 8 million, with another 10 million more in adjacent Pakistan. These are some of the toughest people in Central Asia, which is saying a lot. Although they exist within two separate countries, it is fairer to say that central governments on either side have little or no control over the areas, and rarely dare to try assert any authority.

A former co-worker of mine once visited the Pakistan side of this region back in the early 90's and barely escaped with his life. He told me how these people make their own AK-47's in their little village shops, and have a Spartan culture similar to Chechyna. They are ready to fight to the death anyone who thinks of telling them what to do. And conservative Islam is pretty entrenched. Another former Russian co-worker told me about how in the "-stans" of the former Soviet Union, which are probably more enlightened, it is pretty much a tradition for men to beat their wives daily, just to show them who is boss and to keep them in line. That is life there and has been for eons. Canadians are best to stay out of an area like that where they don't understand the culture and are unlikely to change much.
