WavePhore and SkyCache(TM) to Renovate Internet Backbone; SkyCache Will Use WavePhore Satellite Receivers to Broadcast Web Traffic
March 11, 1998 08:02 AM
LOS ANGELES, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Spring Internet World '98 - WavePhore, Inc. WAVO WavePhore Networks announced today at Spring Internet World '98 that it has signed an agreement with SkyCache, Inc., of Laurel, Md. to provide satellite receivers and uplink equipment required for SkyCache(TM) to create a new Internet data delivery network. The purpose of the new, high-speed network is to employ satellite technology to broadcast the most often used Internet web and news traffic directly to Internet Service Provider (ISP) caches, thereby increasing efficiency of the Internet Backbone and substantially reducing communications costs for ISPs.
The SkyCache service will provide a much more efficient means for ISPs to receive web pages and other Internet traffic, since statistics show that the bulk of all information requests from end users are for a relatively predictable set of data. Using high-speed data broadcast incorporating WavePhore Networks' technologically advanced IDR V1000 SCPC satellite receiver operating at four megabits per second, commonly requested information will be distributed by satellite and cached at local ISPs. Caching web pages at the edge of the Internet will allow users to receive web pages more efficiently and will relieve Internet backbone connections of the need for redundant data. The result will be substantial savings in ISP connection costs as well as enhanced performance for end users.
"We have been enormously impressed with WavePhore Networks' technical expertise and ability to provide precisely the right data broadcast product to meet our needs," noted Doug Humphrey, President and CEO of SkyCache. "It's clear to me why so many of the world's leading information companies also rely on WavePhore for broadcast data solutions."
Under terms of the agreement, WavePhore will install one meter satellite dishes and four megabit per second IDR V1000 variable bit rate satellite receivers with Ethernet output at SkyCache customer sites. WavePhore will also install its network management system at SkyCache's Laurel, Maryland uplink facility, which is expected to serve more than 200 locations within the next twelve months.
"The worlds of data broadcast and the Internet are irreversibly coming together," said David E. Deeds, Chairman, President and CEO of WavePhore, Inc. "The Internet's promise of ubiquitous communications combined with data broadcast's unexcelled efficiency and low cost are a natural combination. As a company, we are gratified to work with SkyCache in uniting these two exciting enabling technologies."
