The Taliban takeover initially as i remember it, was viewed as favorable by some US policy makers.

Which ones specifically? It would probably be more appropriate to say "the lesser of two evils" since the one thing the Taliban were able to bring to Afghanistan was a restored sense of order...

But rather than using that established sense of order to improve the lot of the Afghani people, they repressed them, stifled their entrepreneurialship, and attempted to brainwash them according to their intolerant belief systems.

Thus, I believe the term "favored" is definitely a bit fanciful.

Of course, if actually stated in that manner, I guess we have to ask them whether they are still stupid enough to stand by such words.
