There is plenty of local news local stations could be covering. But it takes money. They can make big bucks running filler material and doing news on the cheap, and thats what many of them do now. Some things about local news are expensive.. for example the ones that have their own helicopters... it costs 300-500 an hour to operate those. Adds up quickly. The ones that use satellite trucks for live shots run up big satellite bills fairly quickly too. But as with most businesses the big costs are usually found in payroll, and many stations have added hours of newscasts and actually cut back on their staffs. So you get more talking heads and less content.
