Sometimes what we really mean doesn't come out in exactly the right way so that others can understand the nuance of our thinking (or understand our thinking at all). I hope (and I suspect) Dr. Summers may be the victim of something like that. It is unfortunate that what he said was prepared, and said in front of such a large audience- those types of gaffes, the ones where we are completely misinterpreted, are more usually spur of the moment, but still, from reading the aftermath, I really don't think he had any idea people would take what he said quite the way they did.

I find when dealing with high school students that it's best to say things many different ways- and then clarify clarify clarify. SI has taught me many things- and one of the most important is that language is very prone to error in communication, and people are very certain of their perceptions on the validity of communications, even when they involve receiving errors. That's an excellent thing to use in any work environment, probably (unless one likes conflict).
