| For what it cost to build a stadium nowadays, if the owners had to pay for the construction there would be no sports. Team salaries are averaging about $100,000 per tear, and ALL of the players have to pay state tax on the games played in each state - not just the state their team is from. The amount of revenue brought in through parking, concessions, and sales tax is astronomical, Bars, restaurants, and hotels pack the people in on game days, and local sports bars depend on local sports on tv to attract their staple crowds. To say that these events don't generate revenue is ridiculous and is obviously the view of the people that have no interest in sports. If someone asked them what the the fans should do with no team, you would probably get an answer like "They should go to church and give all that money they waste on tickets and beer to God!". Do you remember the arguments against the state lottery before we got it? The bible-thumpers flooded the newspapers with letters to the editor. My favorite was from the woman that wrote "Jesus doesn't WANT out children educated with money that comes from gambling". Now the way I see it, unless he climbed down off the cross and whispered that in her ear, he's gonna be awfully pissed when he finds out shes going around making shit like that up! |
