(Media-Newswire.com) - Siemens Power Generation ( PG ) has been awarded a contract to supply two entrained-flow gasifiers with a thermal capacity of 500 megawatts ( MW ) each to China. The order was placed by Shanxi Lanhua Chemical Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of the Lanhua Group. These reactors are to be used to convert coal into synthesis gas for the production of ammonia.
The Siemens scope of supply consists of two Siemens fuel gasifiers with the associated burners and other key gasification island components, along with a license to use the Siemens fuel gasification process. When completed in mid 2010, the coal gasification plant located a few kilometers outside of Jincheng City in Shanxi Province will produce more than 100,000 cubic meters of synthesis gas per hour for the production of ammonia and urea.
Compared with other fossil energy resources such as natural gas or oil, coal is a low-cost, widely available fuel with resources that will last for centuries. Coal is destined to play an increasing role in meeting future energy needs. Seen against this background, techniques like coal gasification and liquefaction are still gaining in importance. "Siemens is extremely well positioned in the 500 MW gasifier class. This order was placed following an order recently posted by Siemens for five entrained-flow gasifiers for China. This is a further chapter in the success story of our technology in China", said Guido Schuld, head of Fuel Gasification within Siemens PG.
Siemens is also doing well in this sector in the U.S. Siemens PG recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on coal gasification technology, this including the supply of two entrained-flow gasifiers rated at 500 MW each. With startup scheduled for 2010, this plant will convert coal to gas and thus play a major part in ensuring the security of U.S. energy supply.
