Are there rules regarding where a stock must be closed, or is it simply up to the specialists discretion? What you are probably seeing is trades which occurred at Market Centers other than the NYSE (like the Pacific Stock Exchange which continues to trade until 4:30PM (Eastern)). New York (SIAC) generates the Consolidated Trade System (CTS) and Consolidated Quote System (CQS) feeds - these feeds include activity from all exchanges, not just the one where the security was listed. see: nyse.com
