Verizon Wireless May Sell Walkie-Talkie Svc July-Report
Friday June 20, 3:38 pm ET

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Verizon Wireless, which is jointly owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone PLC , may launch walkie-talkie cellphone service in July, according to a Bloomberg News report Friday.

Citing people who asked not to be identified, Bloomberg said that Verizon will offer one handset made by Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) and another made by Samsung Electronics Co. that have the capability for walkie-talkie service as early as July.

Verizon Wireless has said it would offer a walkie-talkie phone in the second half of the year, but declined to comment Friday on the report. So far, Nextel Communications Inc. (NasdaqNM:NXTL) has been the only major purveyor of these so-called " push-to-talk" phones. Nextel's dominance of this service has given it a foothold among businesses in certain industries, particularly trucking and manufacturing.
