Now why do North Eastern cities have walking and Western cities not? Remember its not just Houston - no one walks in LA

Perfect analogy - Houston is just like LA. Sprawled out, and car-centered. In Houston, you can't walk because a. its too damn hot most of the time, b. the sidewalk is an afterthought and often don't exist or abrubtly end, c. bike lanes are similarly a joke, d. just about everything is too far to walk or bike to in any case.

In Houston, you have to drive 20 minutes to get to just about anywhere. Just not pedestrian-friendly. NY, in contrast, is the ultimate pedestrian city. I think it has alot to do with the growth period of the cities - eastern cities developed before the car, the West blossomed in the age of the car. Houston became a metropolis within the last twenty years, for example, and it shows. NY is constrained by geography, it's an island. Most Western cities have few such problems. Houston is an amoeba that has swallowed up Harris County and is eyeing up Fort Bend.
