ARMITAGE’S ARMY

By Mowbray on Uncategorized

Though Dick Armitage was a political appointee, there was no mistaking which side he took in the momumental struggles between Bush allies and the Foreign Service. His enemy number one was John Bolton, which former Powell chief-of-staff Larry Wilkerson apparently made clear in an interview with the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That Armitage tepidly endorsed Bolton last week is merely an indication that he still has some political aspirations in the next 3 & 1/2 years. Powell’s former top aide made clear that Armitage hated Bolton’s consistent ability to anger repressive regimes in Pyongyang and Damascus. Remember, Armitage was the one who called Iran a Democracy–in February 2003.

The reason the Dems keep falling back on the “mean people suck” argument is that if they portray the actual battle lines between Bolton and Armitage’s Army (aka, the Foreign Service)–one viewing evil regimes as evil, while the other side seeks to shelter despots–there’s little doubt which view the public would endorse.
