marcher, stress elicits excess cortisol - and you better believe that cortisol plays a role in your wellness.

off the top of my head, excessive cortisol increases insulin resistance and tends to drive up insulin levels.

insulin is a storage hormone, so that blood glucose tends to get stored as fat.

"metabolism" is all about insulin levels. insulin allows blood glucose to roam free and be used as energy or it stores it and prevents it from being released.

if you control your insulin response - you control your weight.

even more important, reducing excess insulin also reduces the enzyme required to drive excess cellular inflammation in the standard american diet (SAD).

genetics are involved in insulin response, but diet plays a *huge* role, too.

manuel uribe's genes didn't change, but he's able to feel great on his way to losing almost 1000 lbs (he's over half way there in 3.5 years).

pbs did a diet study and one participant used the zone to lose weight. note her favorite part of the diet...

Q: What did you like and dislike about your particular method of weight loss?

A: What I really like is how good you feel when you are "in the Zone". You are rarely hungry, and you just feel really, really good - it has a tremendous impact on your mood - unlike other diets I've been on.

this mirrors my experience. i also lost a life long allergy problem, i haven't called in sick to work in 30+ months (and counting - previous best about 10 months), i feel better in my mid 40s than did in my teens, i like cardio for the first time in my life (i previously hated it).

i've lost almost 30 lbs of fat and 3 inches off my waist (effortlessly and without hunger - i loved the way i feel, too!). i've modified the diet a bit to better afford lean muscle mass gains and i'm up about 20 lbs of muscle (i actually spike my insulin post workout to drive protein and nutrients into my cells - i double down on fish oil to offest the extra inflammation induced by the temporarily elevated insulin) - all this after not doing any weight training or running more than 50 yards straight in about 2 decades.

here's a link to the science behind the zone (ignore the typos):

i love rob's comments in this blog...

diet-blog.com

read all the way down. he belittles dr. sears and then goes on to say how he achieved absolutely unbelievable, impossible results following dr. sears' diet.

btw, rob is wrong about dr. sears' theories not being proven in the field.

harvard medical doctors changed (and it isn't easy for doctors to say, "everything we told you before is not quite right") changed their nutritional guidelines so that they are almost an identical match to dr. sears' zone diet.

they made this change b/c nutritional science demanded they do it.
