Microsoft to launch Word in Hindi, other Indian languages
New Delhi, Dec 22: Lured by the potential market in the vast Hindi heartland, US software major Microsoft Corporation has decided to launch its first Hindi software 'Microsoft Word India' by February next. They will be focussing the Union government and a number of states as their major client. The software is expected to be launched along with 'Windows 2000', the new operating system from the Microsoft stable, Microsoft India Managing Director Sanjay Mirchandani told reporters on Wednesday. "This is a turning point in Hindi software development and we expect it to be particularly useful to the grassroots user who works in Hindi," Mirchandani said. The Hindi application will have features similar to the English version right from spell-check and Thesaurus to automatic highlighting of grammatical and spelling errors with the characteristic green and red lines. Hindi, Marathi, Konkani and Sanskrit in Devnagiri script and Tamil are among the 134 international languages that the new operating system - Windows 2000- has been designed to support, N B Sundar, Marketing Manager, Microsoft said. The operating system is a piece of software that acts as the interface between a computer user and the hardware. Till date, no operating system had the ability to process Hindi commands as they were not designed to understand them, Sundar said. (Digital HT) |
