Alcatel Appoints Top Telecom Scientist Glenn Estes Vice President of Network Strategy Worldwide

PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 1999--Alcatel today announced the appointment of Glenn H. Estes to the position of Vice President of Network Strategy for Alcatel. Glenn Estes joins Alcatel from SBC Communications, one of the largest U.S. telecommunications companies, where he was vice president-technology for SBC Technology Resources and chief scientist for SBC. He was responsible for supervising the technical areas of SBC Communications' advanced technology subsidiary and overseeing the transfer of technology to the company's business units. In 1993, Glenn Estes joined Pacific Telesis Group, acquired by SBC, in San Francisco as assistant vice president-corporate strategy. At the same time, he was president of Telesis Technologies Laboratory, where he built a state-of-the-art technology R&D organization. The laboratory was responsible for launching corporate initiatives for Internet, ADSL high speed wireline data, wireless video, electronic commerce, integrated messaging and new IT customer care support systems. He started his career at Bell Telephone Laboratories, where he was a member of the technical staff that introduced digital technology, microprocessors, and optical fiber into transmission and switching systems. From 1984 to 1993, he was a director for Bellcore, the former U.S. RBOC R&D consortium, and was involved in LAN and video technology, broadband access technologies, and ATM technology and services. Glenn Estes established and chaired the first U.S. standards group for broadband technology and he authored the first U.S. contribution to the International Telecommunications Union, proposing the adoption of SONET. He chaired the national and international standards group that wrote the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol.
