But what really struck me about the place is the breath of poverty.

What you saw was "Flintstones." A 4th world situation. Combine that with the attempts to fix it, which were summed up by the WaPo article posted yesterday by the reporter who went back to help the victims of the Tsumani, and you see the problem.

It seems you can help individuals by taking them out of the culture to the USA, but you can't help the culture from outside. The solution that I know works is when people who grew up there leave, make some money, and then come back to build a local business. Usually the local businesses there that do work are people from India. Who get killed and run off for what they have every time a new "President for Life" takes over.
