So with your parenting philosophy, how exactly do you handle drugs? Do you, or did you, let your children experiment, since that would in some sense be a move towards adulthood?

I am fairly confident I am misunderstanding you, and I don't want to do that. I do believe that mothers are first responsible to give their children most of their attention, and I would drop volunteer work and community involvement in a heartbeat if my increased ability to guide/supervise a troubled child was the result.

At about 18, most children do seem to reintegrate the different parts of their identity they are trying to sort out, and become more mature and more stable. I definitely parent my 21-year-old very differently than I did before she was 18. Then, preventing a crash into drugs/alcohol/other damaging things was paramount. Sometimes teenagers never make it back from those things. Now it is easy for me to stress that she is adult and let natural consequences take their course, because I don't feel she is in so much potential jeopardy.
