This is how I saw the news:
- Someone starts something
- Russia invades George with a military force that is much bigger than necessary
- The russian invasion almost cripples Georgia
- Mr. Bush immediately meets with Putin and criticizes Russia
- Many other countries openly criticize Russia
- Former European communist countries start to offer various kinds of help to Georgia, against Russia. clearly indicating their choice of side
- No country expresses support for Russia
- Noone believes that the Georgians are only nice people, but nobody has proven that they did anything wrong.
- Several articles indicate that the russian leaders either have been telling untrue things about the russian side, or don't have control over their army. Maybe it's just bad translation, I don't know.
- Journalists report that russian troups are marching into parts of Georgia that are not SO or Abkhazia
- EU visits Medvedev and puts enormous pressure on Russia
- Russia stops

My guess is, that EU told Russia, that this is the last chance for the Russian government to decide important parts of the continued story. If the Russian government doesn't want to look like unprofessional fools in the minds of the ordinary Russian, they need to stop immediately.

The current plan seems to be able to stop the warfare without having the Russians look like complete fools.

As I said, maybe Russia's intentions were honorable, but overwhelming violence is not as popular these days. USA's invasion in Iraq is also very unpopular in Europe.
