It's strange to me too.

Often, people chose political sides for reasons which are not rational. Some of those "views" are hard wired. Too often people look at the same facts and see different things. Often people will listen and understand - and even agree - with political arguments contrary to theirs, only to revert back to their "feelings" about the issue.

In one study women were asked which smell they liked better - that of a newborn baby, or of freshly brewed coffee. There was a strong correlation between liking the smell of the baby - and having conservative political views, and v. versa.

I think there is no disagreement that societies in which individuals freely pursue their interests are more prosperous than bureaucratic command economies, in which actions by citizens are rigidly controlled. But then, again, great numbers of people would prefer to be poorer - for as long as everyone is more or less equal.
