I just posted to i-node about this a moment ago... A friend who is an outstandingly bright guy, very well informed and an author of several books questioned me once - why do I think that if some action or project is done privately, it's good, and if the very same thing is done by the government, it's necessarily bad?

I think it's a very good and legitimate question.

The answer is, of course, that the government's actions and decisions are - sort of - set in stone.... they are inflexible, there is little room for mistakes, for inventiveness. They are more likely to get bogged down by unintended consequences - and in snowballing attempts to correct and control those consequences. Not to mention that governments will enshrine their mistakes in law - and punish people for not obeying those laws.

Socialized healthcare would be subject to the same drawbacks.
