Hi CGB! I'm trying to slip in here unnoticed to comment on something you said.
<<I try not to villify people who are attempting to do good, if they are not harming anyone.
Some of the most harmful, but deceptively benign appearing, acts are carried out by the most caring, "helpful" people, acting out of a very narrow frame of reference. At first glance, social workers seem an incongruous addition to John's list, but (having been one)if he means that they only perpetrate the problems in the larger system, he's right. THey are not "evil" people, but my experience has been that they are often limited in their goals and having once decided that their course was the right one, they are pretty closed to opposing views. The worst of the lot are the ones who act morally superior to anyone who doesn't believe as they do. I guess what I mean is that because people are nice and don't mean to do harm, doesn't mean we shouldn't question their motives and actions. "Harm" is sometimes not so easy to discern. |
