Triumphalism And Relaxation

Editorial by Dale Switzer

Many people are comparing this week to 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I share their enthrusiasm - or should I call it triumphalism.

I have experienced this triumphant feeling a few times in my life: in 1980 after Ronald Reagan’s election, in 1989 and fall of the Berlin Wall, in 1994 and the Contract With America, and again just a few months ago with the Bush takeover of the Federal Government.

At least two of those times turned out to be a bust. After James Carville and Bill Clinton finished with Newt Gingrich, he was lucky that his own mother still loved him (or even recognized him).

I want to make sure that we don’t fall into the same trap this time. What is that trap? Relaxation. Occasionally, republicans (and americans in general) decide that we have won and can end the battle. President George Herbert Walker Bush fell into this trap when he ended the first Persian Gulf War after only 100 hours of land combat. We are still suffering for his mistake.

The war for freedom is not over; the War on Terror is barely begun. We cannot lay down our guns every time that the enemy ceases firing. The enemy wishes to call a cease fire every time that they are at a disadvantage. One day, we will find out that the advantage is no longer ours. A cease-fire will not be an available option then.

So, what must President Bush, Karl Rove, and Secretary of State Condolezza Rice do?

They must keep the pressure on Syria. They seem to be doing this.

They must continue to say why democracy ( meaning liberty, not just a one time vote ) is the appropriate state of every country at every time.

Here, in this country, Karl Rove must continue the destruction of the democrats as the home of anti-americanism. I say this not because I have a particular despite for the DNC. I wish that the democrat party would reorganize itself as the home of pro-gun, redneck, libertarian good ole boys. I would not join the democrats if they did this reorganization. But my country would be better off if our political battles were between people wh0 loved their country. I do not care for politcal battles between patriots and treasonous backstabbers.

(If you need an example of what I’m talking about. Go to the Democrat Underground.

Do you notice that my advice to the administration all contains the word “continue”. That is because I do believe that they are doing a good work. I only fear that they may grow “weary in well doing.”

In the immortal words of Maggie Thatcher, “This is no time to go wobbly.”
