Yes, that was the articled you cited, and I don't think there was ever any indication you read the original research review it was based on, much less any alternative views. The "best data" from "the major metastudy" is still your inventive evaluation, though the second hand regurgitation from USNews does, indeed claim that " Larzelere ferreted out the 35 best studies. ". Sort of a bald claim, that. Maybe it's true, maybe Larzelere had an axe to grind and carefully picked out the work that went where he wanted to go.

It does, somehow, all seem to align nicely with conservative "family values", as it were. Forgive me for suspecting that perhaps that has more to do with your "the best data from the major metastudy" evaluation than the actual quality of USNew's research review capabilities.
