Regarding the rain in the midwest and the potential impact on crop yields, this is a challenge. The anticipated ruin and also low yields is exactly what is happening in the area of the four corners, IA, WI, IL and MN, where there is still water standing in the fields in many places. Bad start for the corn, and beans will replace the corn where some replanting will take place. My extended family there usually locks in half of the corn sales via futures in the months of April though June, and then does the other half around August to November, depending on anticipated yields, weather etc. They grow and control many thousands of acres. Comparatively bad year coming in 2008 for yields due to the rains and also due to insufficient HDDs for the to be replanted corn crop, and this area in southern WI is great fertile land for excellent corn and soybean yields. Amongst the best in the world for yields.
