There are TWO kinds of decoders: Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Digital, which is also sometimes referred to as AC-3 circuitry:
In a nutshell, Dolby Pro Logic provides four channels of sound for left, right, and center speakers in front of you, plus a surround channel for two surround speakers which are placed to the sides or rear of your seat.
Dolby Digital is more advanced circuitry which was originally developed for movie theaters. It offers a more realistic home theater experience by providing five full-range channels including separate left and right surround channels. There is also a special low frequency effects channel for enhanced impact from your subwoofer.

Like Dolby Digital, dts is an all-digital audio surround sound format featuring fully-discrete audio channels, including five full-frequency channels for left, center, right and stereo surround, plus a Low Frequency Effect (LFE) channel.
Both Dolby Digital and dts offer audio performance vastly superior to the earlier Dolby Pro-Logic system; however, some argue that dts marginally outperforms Dolby Digital due to its lower compression rate. While Dolby Digital has a significant lead in available movie software, dts leads in available multi-channel audio software. Since they both use the same speaker and amplifier configuration, many manufacturers are including both decoders in their new surround processors and receivers to provide maximum system compatibility.
