First Phone-to-Phone, Voice-Over-Internet Call From U.S. To China a Complete Success
Franklin Telecom's State-Of-The-Art Tempest(R) Data Voice Gateway Used by CyComm for Historic "Virtual Toll Quality" Telephone Call
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 1998-- Franklin Telecom Corp. (www.ftel.com), a leading provider of telecommunications and Internet telephony equipment, software and services, today announced that CyComm, a private telecommunications company, used Franklin's Tempest(R) Data Voice Gateway (DVG) to complete the first successful voice over Internet call between the greater Los Angeles area and mainland China.
''We tested several voice-over-Internet devices and found the voice quality of the Franklin Tempest, when used to complete a telephone call over thousands of miles through an international Internet connection, provides as close to toll-quality voice transmission as anyone could want to hear,'' said Lee Guo, president of CyComm. ''Our engineers were especially impressed with the Tempest's packet recovery and hardware compression technology.''
CyComm has been conducting evaluation tests of Franklin's Tempest in the U.S. and believes there is a strong market for this service in China, as well as in other Pacific Rim countries. CyComm established the far-end test site in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province near Shanghai. Hangzhou has a population of over one million people. The call was received at Franklin Telecom's headquarters location in Westlake Village, CA.
''Franklin is excited to be a part of this historic phone call,'' said Frank Peters, president and CEO of Franklin Telecom. ''We believe this inaugural call signals a new age for long distance and international telephony -- an age where such a call as this will cost only pennies per minute rather than today's direct dial business day calling rate of $2.60 a minute to mainland China.''
