Now make your case for greater harm that comes to the USA by our continued support of the Iraq government.

The short answer is Vietnam. We were there for nearly 20 years and the minute we left, the government we were propping up fell. Do you think another 20 years would've done the trick? And now those communists are our friends and trading partners.

This idea that we can prop up an Iraqi government that will survive, let alone thrive, without us could be false no matter how long we stay. In the meantime we squander lives, money, and inspire yet another generation of terrorists who want to evict us from their part of the world, just as they did with the Russians in Afghanistan. And our occupation of an Arab country hurts our friends in the region just as our troops in Saudi Arabia hurt Saudi Arabia.

American troops on Arab soil further radicalizes the region. Isn't that the opposite of our goal?

So of course there's a potential and cumulative downside to staying. And the truth is we won't really know what will become of Iraq when we leave until we leave.
