TSO: Talking about LU vs. LSI I yanked the following from LU's recent release:

MICROELECTRONIC PRODUCTS

Revenues increased 15.5 percent over the year-ago quarter to $775 million, driven by sales of customized chips for computing
and communications, including components for wireless telephones, local area networks, data networking and high-end
computer workstations.
Increased revenues from power systems, optoelectronic components and the licensing of intellectual
property also contributed significantly to the group's revenues. Revenues were driven by sales to original equipment
manufacturers.

Comparing calendar year 1997 to 1996, revenues increased 17.8 percent to $2.859 billion.

Interestingly the word "semiconductor" was not mentioned in the release! But I was surprised to see the "licensing of IP" thing. And the "customized chips" means they are playing in LSI's backyard.

I wish I knew how much of the 2.859 competes with LSI.

----

The reason I had looked into them eons ago was the Bell Labs connection. Figured there had to be value there just waiting to be exploited.

---

And yes they are richly valued!

---

BTW do you buy the theory that Fidelity Low Priced Stock espouses. Cheaper (in terms of $ value) stock => better returns all else being equal? I actually think there is, don't believe that there should be (liquidity maybe explains it), but buy my stocks believing there is such an effect!

//ot Tech is great isn't it. CIEN out of business with one invention! Yikes...

---

//ot On CYMI I looked into them sometime ago when they got schmoked from 30 to 25. Got to know them thru SVGI. Nice product, essential product but could never figure out if their mgt. guys and the analysts were telling the truth! At the time they actually reminded me of LSI somewhat - one rumor and bang stock gets killed!

Might get some now that you guys are so high on them - but I do tend to be very wary of one product type companies and so I'll first have to convince myself that I'm darn certain that there are no potential tech-mines on the horizon (ala CIEN vs. LU/CGW !!!). However, without doing more research, my hunch is that CYMI is probably a very good bet at these levels. But what the heck was it doing at these levels! DUV is real! Unless something else is up?
