Republicans thought they could default on the debt and nothing would happen. They were so delusional Congress had to call in S&P and explain to them what would happen - financial Armageddon. When one party votes for people who are so clueless that they want to default on the debt then voters must remove them from office ASAP. They didn't do that and now the entire republican party is crippled and has been crippled since they were elected (the tea party nuts). A debt ceiling increase has value whatsoever but can cause enormous damage when it's not raised by partisan hacks in the republican party.
