For example, high school and college kids will still find it much easier to do papers on a notebook than on an iPad.

Why?

Almost all Web content is still tailored toward PCs and Macs, not iPhones and iPads. Sure, there are stripped-down mobile versions of popular web sites, but they're still stripped down.

The standard Internet is a much better experience on the iPad. Assume you are in an easy chair, it's sitting on your chest so it approximates a much larger screen, unlike a notebook that is probably sitting on a table. Need to do something in the kitchen? Bring it with you. Touch is easier and a more intuitive way to navigate the web than a mouse.

I plan to get an iPad eventually, but I sure won't be doing word processing or spreadsheets on it.

You won't, many others will. And many, many people don't do word processing or spreadsheets at home, or work for that matter. Those folks have no need for a PC or Mac, and all the hassles that come with them.

The iPad is just a much better interactive experience.
