Wednesday, August 22, 2001 Au, J-Phone, DoCoMo To Launch Video-Transmission Services
TOKYO (Nikkei)--KDDI Corp.'s (9433) cellular phone division, au, will start a video-image transmission service as early as November, company sources said Wednesday.
Subscribers of au's cell phone-based EZ Web Internet-access service will be able to receive video images, such as news programs, music videos, movie/TV advertisements and restaurant information.
Initially, au will transmit 10-20 seconds of video images using its existing 64kbps data communications network.
When the network speeds up to 144kbps, possibly in the fall, videos as long as 4-5 minutes will be transmitted.
J-Phone Group is considering offering a similar service sometime before the year-end, ahead of its planned launch of a third-generation cell phone service next June.
NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) plans to offer a video-transmission service before year-end via its 3G cell phone format, Foma, offering a throughput of 384kbps.
