I tend not to be a big friend of the big stocks (like they miss my investment $s!). But I sometimes think I should balance my portfolio more esp. these days when the big stocks are zooming ahead!

And though I agree with you absolutely that there is a herd mentality with the bigger stocks, I see someone like CSCO or MSFT or LU as being the biggest stocks and growing revenue much much faster than some of the mid-sized companies. And taking away market share! With techs it seems to be that big does not nec. mean not nimble!

I would agree absolutely that with companies like G, KO, P&G etc the herd instinct is alive and well and unjustified. Those index funds are also playing a huge part in overvaluing these kinds of stocks.

(Ha! Yes I've forgotten about those 3 d's!)

(Actually I was referring to low $ stocks - say a stock at $8/share vs. a stock at $88/share. Still your point brings up a different and interesting take on this Nifty Fifty mania.)
