It is possible that this brokerage house has some big clients who wanted an attractive entry point into QLT, and the folks at teh brokerage were "ethically challenged" enough to resort to these dubious tactics.

Watch for a sudden reversal in opinion, or check if they are now buying QLT. This which would be pretty incriminating, IMO. Also a stupid way to do business long term.

Also possible that they just want some free advertising via newswire service. No such thing as bad press, right?
