Mary, maybe the reason women are under represented in the Academic end of science and engineering research, is because they are just smarter then men. Maybe lifestyle is a factor, academic research pays less than private industry, and requires more hours of work (at least for those on the tenure track).

Or maybe, because the United States relies so much on foreign born (and educated) graduate students and researchers, the United States is merely feeling the effects of the male chauvinism of Asian and European colleges and universities.

Almost half the doctors coming out of American medical and dental schools are women. The numbers of women graduating from engineering schools (undergraduate) has gone up close to 1000% in the past 25 years (now 25%).
