cr - i can't reply directly, because since ie4 crashed my system wp8 started misbehaving. so i uninstalled wp8 and haven't yet dared put it back until i'm sure everything is working right again. however, when i tried to convert i got a <unrecognized file format> message. then somewhere, i think in help, i found the information that wp8 does not handle word97 files. when i reinstal wp8 i will try the workaround you suggest. thanks very much tom
