A recap
The crew of the ship and the captain, the lookout and the helmsman, were all blindfolded. This was at the orders of the Captain. He had decided to fight the an unseen enemy fairly, by being un-seeing, so... The ship had taken several good blows before the storm closed in, the last big gun had gone off, and hit nothing. The ship had continued on with the storm getting worse, wetting the priming pans and making the ship yaw hugely. The helmsman kept swinging the ship round and round choosing directions at random, the lookout continued to yell all clear.

The above events are recounted here

When the small sail shredded the NAXOF lost some more speed. An occasional shot ripped out of the night darkness, but the cannonade had stopped. The ship was sorely damaged. Several fires had raged unchecked as the blindfolded sailors stumbled over each other, unable to help. The cabin boys dog ran wildly around barking at everything and just adding to the general confusion. The cabin boy was chasing the dog, trying to save it from the flames and smoke. Many had been severely wounded and the tremendous amount of blood attested to the real cost of the peppering the NAXOF had undergone. It was a scene from Dante.
