The problem with that, Grainne, is that properly done clearcutting is not the loss of a forest but the beginning of a new one that is much more efficient at making oxygen and other benefits that the one it replaced. People don't like clearcutting because it looks bad for a few years. They put up a big fuss and make forest management so costly that the industry gives up and starts importing wood from places that don't give a rat's patootie about good management. Then we DO get environmental degradation, big time. It's in somebody else's back yard, but we get the bad effects over here.
