Happy mothers' day to you, too, Ionesco, and to all the other mothers out there.
One of the PETA mothers' day poems is about a teacher, so I thought I would post it to you. It is not as lyrical and poignant as some of the other PETA poetry contest winners, but it is quite relevant:
Guess What, Mr. Novak?
(To Mr. Novak, CEO of Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC) by Amy Freyn
Guess what, Mr. Novak? I am a high school teacher. Today I reached, inspired, and taught... 124 bright students— a portion of your target market. Guess what, Mr. Novak? I taught Alice Walker’s poem (the one you didn’t think would really matter that much). Today my students learned ... About the inhumane cruelty your company imposes— and my students listened.
Guess what, Mr. Novak? I live in Kentucky.
Guess what, Mr. Novak? My students like me. My students now like Alice Walker and of course they like Russell Simmons and Pamela Anderson. My students now know about chicken cruelty. My students now know what it means to eat at KFC.
Guess what, Mr. Novak? I gave Alice Walker’s poem to four other teachers.
Guess what, Mr. Novak? I need your help ... in teaching my students about standing up for justice— about doing what’s right— about making a difference— about using their voice.
Guess what, Mr. Novak? This is the message I teach. This is the message I will continue to teach. |
