David’s Dream
by Jenny Bain

At night, David dreams.
They are beautiful,
even surreal,
the things he sees.
Lovely,
soft, white girls
in cages beneath his bed.
A harem
of pretty creatures
who fill pails with blood.
An offering to the Sandman,
David’s father and master.
The great and terrible father
who taught his son
the delicate art
of turning horror
to dreams
and death
to money.

At night, when David dreams
screams turn to music
and feathers become coins.
