TSO:

See you noticed that LSI post restructuring has not misbehaved that badly! (Of course starting from a smaller base post restructuring helps our cause. But we won't mention that to anyone!)

As to why things have gone in reverse for the LSI engine since then your guess is as good as mine. The inventory correction started the whole demise. That surely can't be the reason for the entire decline!

Whether they just got caught flatfooted with targeting markets that were slow to develop would be my best hope guess. Worst case scenario guess they developed a lot of Edsels and customers went elsewhere - thus R&D is being wasted and M.Murphy's R&D argument just went out the window.

Pragmatically I wonder if it was also just a matter of a lack of good tools and design methodologies.

LSI may have been going for the jugular in terms of complexity and then hit the brick wall when designs were taking 5x longer because of the difficulties involved in designing these chips. Thus customers go the PLD route or the multiple chip route and LSI is left standing at the altar.

The other thing is if people like Brian Halla leaving caused a brain drain. I don't know this but I've often been struck by the number of firms I see started by ex-LSI guys.

Anyway I'll stick to my "digital revolution was slow to develop" excuse. That would explain a lot and still keep LSI in the driver's seat. Since I own the stock this is where I'd like them to be!!
