It does give them an increased interest in the company.

If they want to increase their financial interest in the company, they can buy stock.

Any worker receiveing a share of the company would be free to dispose of it for immediate income.

Which most would choose to do. So what does that accomplish? It's a whole lot easier and whole lot more popular to give them their compensation in dollars.
