But Bush's capacity to imagine a different Middle East may actually be related to his relative ignorance of the region

Yes, good thing he didn't burden himself by listening to too many "experts", or he'd never have acted!

I love this criticism - Okay, so you got the big idea right, but you were too brusque/incompetent/scary in the way you acted!

Guys, without the action, none of the good stuff would have happened. Like every big action, it had a lot of opposition, no way on this planet Earth to execute it without mistakes and arguments and emotions. We can quibble later about the mistakes , okay? The point is, if Bush had been Clinton, if he had merely talked, if the Taliban and Saddam were still in power, none of the good stuff would have happened. The Lebanese protestors would not have played You Bet Your Life with the Assad regime if it weren't for the American army on Syria's border, and who could blame them for that? So cough up some credit to Bush, willya?

Now, if you have any useful, pertinent advice about how to proceed in the here and now, I'm all ears.
