April 18, 2002 6:56:00 PM ET

SEATTLE, April 18 (Reuters) - Software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) on Thursday said its quarterly net profit rose 12 percent to $2.74 billion while revenue grew 13 percent to $7.25 billion.

Following is a breakdown of revenue by division:

* Desktop Applications, the company's largest segment which includes its popular Office suite of productivity programs, inched up to $2.44 billion in the quarter from $2.41 billion a year earlier.

Microsoft said it expects the segment to be flat to up slightly in its fourth quarter from a year earlier.

* Desktop Platforms, representing its flagship Windows operating system, rose more than 11 percent to $2.29 billion from $2.05 billion on strong shipments of the latest version of the platform Windows XP.

The business is seen growing in the "mid-teens" in the fourth quarter, Microsoft said.

* Consumer Software, Services and Devices, which include the MSN Internet unit and Xbox video game console, saw revenue soar to $1.07 billion from $460 million a year earlier, boosted by sales of the game console, which debuted last November.

* Enterprise Software and Services, such as the SQL database and Exchange corporate communications software, rose less than 2 percent, to $1.28 billion from $1.25 billion a year earlier. REUTERS
