Uniphase Corp. (UNPH) rose as much as 2 7/16, or 3.7
percent, to 68 15/16. The maker of fiber optic telecommunications
components sold its semiconductor wafer-inspecting equipment
business to KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC) for an undisclosed price.
''It's a financial positive for the company,'' said analyst Jeff
Lipton at Hambrecht & Quist Group, who rates the stock a ''buy.''
Lipton said although the divestiture will result in a charge of
about $3 million, the company will be better able to focus on its
faster-growing and more profitable optical equipment business.
