More on the Army. The active Army's FY 2005 authorized end strength is 502,400. An additional 30,000 have been authorized for FY 2005-2009 for a total Army current authorized manpower of 532,400. On 9/30/2004, the end of FY 2004, the Army stood at 499,543 with a mission to increase to 532,400. The last released monthly total was December 2004 and the Army reported 494,112. That is a total shortfall of 38,288 personnel. Two divisions worth and we only have 10 active divisions. The actual current manpower total is certainly lower because reports have already been released announcing recruiting shortfalls for Jan and Feb 2005. We have seen enormous increases in initial recruiting bonuses up to $45,000 for some, and reenlistment bonuses of up to $150,000. It remains to be seen if they will stem the tide. I personally doubt it. uw
