Dell and Compaq provide MSFT not because MSFT is breathing down their necks...

MSFT cut all sorts of cozy deals with all the box makers to preload their software and only their software, under threat of having vastly less attractive license costs. I'd like someone to show me where one could have bought any Intel based PC that did *not* have MSFT preloaded.

I sometimes see remarks to the effect that "So why didn't Apple just port to Intel?" coming from people who have no idea that one of the primary purposes of these MSFT deals was to kill off Apple. There is no way Apple could have "ported" their software to Intel based hardware since anyone running Apple on those platforms would have to in addition pay for MSFT licenses (factored into the cost of the hardware.)

The only major company I can think of off hand that has resisted MSFTs monopolistic business practices is Adobe. Thanks to razor-sharp patent attorneys and top quality innovation in the area of document preparation and management.
