Nokia <NOK1V.HE> says 3G plans proceeding well

HELSINKI, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> said on Tuesday plans to release its high-speed third-generation (3G) handsets in the third and fourth quarters of next year were proceeding well.

"(We) reiterate that the first Nokia 3G terminals will start shipping in the third quarter 2002 with volumes rising into the millions during the fourth quarter," Nokia said in a statement.

Nokia had reiterated in the statement its plans to launch high-speed general packet radio service (GPRS) phones in the third and fourth quarters of this year.

Nokia's comments come after grim forecasts from Swedish rival Ericsson <LMEb.ST> which roiled markets. Some analysts have questioned whether Nokia's GPRS phones would come out on time, which when paired with earnings fears about the firm have sent Nokia shares to over two-year lows.
