Thanks for the note. I apologize too for reading the negative into your post.

Here's my last try at the cache thing:

Let's just assume that 2MBytes of cache maxes out the advantages of on-die cache. If you can put the same amount of cache on a die in the space that it takes now to put one tenth that amount, i.e., like on current cumines w/256kB, then you get 5X the number of die per wafer and your profits go through the roof, as 80% are at "no cost" relative to your previous costs producing the same product.

Thus, if Intel had exclusive rights to OUM, they would be sittin' pretty...

Of course, this only applies to the market segment addressed by that particular Xeon chip with the big cache. Still, one wonders what advantage Intel would have if cumines w/2MB L2 were competing against Athlons with 2KB L2.
