Mephisto, others, if you want to read a 180 degs. out of phase opinion from Mr. Neff's see SI AMD post #5178. It points to Edelstone's Pru downgrade of Intel. Some people in here have blasted Pru for various reasons they had. Well, let me join the stone casters, because the statement below tells me he does not even understand Intel's product intentions. The excerpt:
___________________________________________________________________ He said the forthcoming Klamath Pentium Pro chips offer "limited improvement in performance over the current Pentium Pro versions, (which) could lead to a slower-than-expected ramp once demand from early adopters has been satisfied." _______________________________________________________________________ The Klamath chip, although based on PPro architecture is intended for the desktop market, not the workstation/server market, which is where most PPros are going, I believe. Klamath doesn't even have L2 cache in the same package as the processor, to drastically cut its price and make it reasonable in price for single, maybe dual, processor home or office PCs. It is supposed to solve the 16 bit performance issue that the PPro has, however. So, it'll be the latest and greatest screamer for those individuals who have to have the fastest chip. It should NOT be compared to the PPros with cache on board, rather with Pentiums.
Makes me wonder what else this Edelstone guy doesn't understand, if he doesn't even know what markets the new chips are intended for.
